Early green-up

Landscape has been greening up rapidly like a magic.
Almost all of the tree buds open at the same time, painting the landscape
various different shades of soft green.
This happens earlier year by year recently.

Kasugano-enchi Park, April 9th

Appearance of new leaves, unfurling colors and shedding light,
is full of hope and possibilities.
A haiku poem from Ukraine, however, made me look at the early spring trees
- the mixture of soft green, khaki or olive drab, yellow and white -
in a different angle.

Even the trees are wearing
Military uniform

During the Sakura season when pale pink blossoms are all around, baby leaves
 could be overlooked.

Umami Hills Park, March 28th

Dandelions along the wooden steps and around are not just another ordinary scene.

Purplish-pink little flowers of Mitsuba-tsutsuji, or Rhododendron dilatatum,
would look less prominent in the overwhelming presence of Sakura.
It is the early-blooming azalea of which bloom time coincides with Sakura
and is endemic to Kanto to Kansai regions.

In the meanwhile, green colors grow brilliant and deep.

Yellow and white come to look clearer in the deeper green.

Though it's still mid-April, land is already in the attire of early summer green.
Sunlight feels strong on sunny days except for the time when being covered in
yellow dust from the continent.

  1. What a beautiful first photo … so open and free. And how chilling and sad the Haiku from Ukraine. How I wish for a world where everyone can enjoy flowers and the first green buds of spring in peace.

  4. Yoko - nice to see you blogging again - I trust the cataract surgery went well - your photos would certainly suggest that is the case! I sighed deeply, looking at the delicate greens and other spring shades in your photos. Here we are still brown!!! We are heading to the beach in a couple of days, and I am looking forward to the greens and vibrant colors of the tropics. Thanks for the Ukraine haiku - it is easy to become complacent about this situation that has been going on so long and is so far away ... Thanks for visiting my blog!

  5. Dear Yoko - everything is looking so green and lush with you - really beautiful. I particularly like the photo of the Japanese Maples, whose leaves resemble little green stars.
Like Angie, I too have been thinking about you and hoping all went well for you with your surgery.

  6. Having just looked again at your previous post Yoko, I now perceived that perhaps I missed an obvious clue!
"Restless as always at this time of year, I strolled around various different places with clearer, brighter vision".

  9. Yoko, your photos are exquisite as always and bring me a lot of joy. Enjoy your spring. We are still waiting here for warmer weather though the sakura blossoms have largely bloomed and fallen. I so wanted to get photos on a beautiful day but those are few. I did manage once or twice.

  15. Your colour scheme is amazingly diverse, Yoko. I look and marvel. I was delighted to see the first dandelions recently. In May the world will change "rapidly like a magic". As for the haiku, I prefer classics. - Basho, Issa, these authors.

  16. You posted so many beautiful photos in this post. As you say, trees can develop leaves so quickly in spring. I left Nashville two weeks ago for Atlanta, and my trees were almost bare in Nashville, then when I came back they were already covered with leaves. Nature is amazing.
