Glorious Kobus Magnolia by the Sagi-ike Pond

Kobus magnolias (Kobushi in Japanese) stand gloriously by the Sagi-ike Pond in Nara Park.

They are native to the mountainous part of Japan and are also called Mountain Magnolia.
Kobus magnolia flowers are said to resemble cherry blossoms when viewed at a distance.

Get closer to see more clearly.

Here are some wildlife around the trees in bloom.

Heron

Deer

Wedding photos are often taken under the exuberant florescence.

Boating is a popular pastime at the pond.

The overflowing cascade of the flowers

Incidentally....

Brown-eared Bulbul and early-blooming 緋寒桜 (literally meaning scarlet-cold-Sakura)
 at the Umami Hills Park

Sakura (cherry blossoms) season is just around the corner.
It is reported officially that the Somei-yoshino sakura started blooming in Nara the other day.
The current progression of the blooms and the ongoing cold weather till the beginning of the next week
will prolong the best Sakura season.
Keep tuned to my next post.

  1. As beautiful as any of the wonderful photos you've shown us through the seasons. We grow these magnolias over here in gardens but they never seem to flourish as well as they do in their native land.

  2. Incredibly beautiful flora! And superb photography. I especially enjoyed how you kept the little birds and deer in sharp focus amongst the lushness of the blossoms! I can see why people would want to be married amongst such beauty.

I'm on a little hiatus but am still posting at bit on our website: http://www.landlfotos.com/blog

Hope all is well with you and your family!

  3. There must be a wonderful sweet smell in the air at Sagi-ike Pond with those magnolia blossoms frothing from the tree. Your close up is so lovely, and I enjoy seeing the family boating framed by the blossoms. Your photos allow me to create stories about the people enjoying the blossoms (including you, Yoko). I look forward to Nara's cherry blossom season. We continue with our snow. Bob is outside in frigid temperatures this morning clearing it from our decks. I'll put on the cross country skis when it warms a bit and go into the forest. I'll think of you and your blossoms as I glide.

  4. I do love Magnolia Trees and often wish that I had planted one in my garden - the sadness is that their blooms seem to pass so quickly and here they often get caught by a late early morning frost.
Your captures of the birds, wildlife, and blossom are always charming to see.

  5. Thanks for sharing, stardust. The bride and groom under the tree, the pond, the boaters, the deer … all amid blossoms where everything looks peaceful and right with the world. I feel a little more relaxed just seeing these scenes, even from a distance. :)

Let's enjoy Sakura,Yoko!

  14. Dear Yoko,
your pictures are enchanting! Blossoms, deer, occasional figures, water mirrors - everything is just wonderful, but I am thrilled to see birds more than anything! Wildlife, as you nicely put it. Wild or tame, these creatures against gorgeous spring blooming inspire hope that we (humanity) will survive.
I am glad to get you interested in a new author. "The Hours" is, in my view, a sophisticated story. Do you know that originally Woolfe's novel was entitled "The Hours"? She later turned it into "Mrs Dallowaw". You sound quite an expert quoting first lines of books, very impressive.
Thank you for a wonderful break, enjoy spring in beautiful Nara!
always happy to hear from you,
    Irina

  18. Every year when the magnolias come out, I take photographs, but I've never managed to get any birds in the picture. You have two lovely pictures with birds in and the one with the heron is particularly beautiful.
I am sure that magnolias don't grow naturally in England, as we only ever see them in gardens, but because they are all specialist plants, there are also many different varieties. Some were coming out as early as January this year (that's very early) but other varieties are at their peak right now. You might remember that I posted about a very early Spring in England. I had been worried that "real" spring would be a washout. But actually, it is just as beautiful as usual. I wonder how flowers do it :)

  22. I love the beautiful flowering magnolias. Birds are interested in them. No wonder young couples take photos of their background. Flowering cherries are also, of course, beautiful. Regards.

  24. That has a good time to walk under these flowery branches. Seeing your photographies it wanted to be the bird that settles in them.
