"Winter is an etching"

"Winter is an etching."

Incidentally,
"Spring is a watercolor

summer an oil painting

and autumn a mosaic of them all."

Do you miss spring, summer, or autumn
or get inspired to go out to admire the simple beauties of winter?

It’s amazing how even the simplest things can produce the most beautiful scenes.

An intense cold wave enveloped the Japanese archipelago, bringing heavy snow to a wide range of western and central Japan on the last weekend.  Even subtropical Amami Island observed snowfall for the first time in 115 years, but no snow here in Nara, although we felt chilled to the bone and gusty winds felt like a razor cutting through streets. It is forecast that it will be warmed up with rising temperatures higher than ten degrees C toward the weekend.

  2. wind can make it so very cold!
too bad you did not get a dusting at least of snow.
your photos are so lovely of the seasons.
i do occasionally dream of other seasons while in the deep of winter. for the most part i simply become winter until the world of spring arrives.

  4. Lovely, stardust! Each one of these images exposes a masterpiece of nature and is a moment captured by a photographer who spied it with her clear and magical eye. :)

  5. Hello Yoko, your photos are beautiful, as always! I'm finding it difficult to enjoy this winter. We have had rain, here it is rain and more rain.....and mud in parks and gardens. These fluctuations in temperature are strange.
    Roll on Summer!

    Have a lovely week,
    Ruby

  6. While I enjoy the other seasons, winter has a special place in my heart. I love the simple tranquility of a white on white landscape. I like the subdued light illuminating seed heads and tree branches. Your moon shot is beautifully framed by the evergreens. Too much wind in any season makes it difficult for me to enjoy the outdoors. I always love seeing a bit of white in your Nara photos - luckily, winter isn't over yet!

  9. What lovely definitions you have used for each season Yoko, each one being so appropriate - I shall remember your wise words.

  12. The Moon reflection is gorgeous! Every season has its own beauty and so does winters. The colors are soothing and there is a certain peace that floats in the air. But winters gets me all cudddled up in woolens and sweaters and makes me incredibly lazy venturing out. I can just imagine warming myself by the fireplace instead.

  13. Fascinating approach, Yoko, you are a true artist! One of the winter etchings reminds of my favourite haiku; let me reproduce it in Russian:
    Осенняя луна
    сосну рисует тушью
    на синих небесах.

Yesterday I sent you the photos attached separately (2 mails, 5 and 6 pics). And later I sent a written letter, but today morning came "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender" with your address. Did you get my 3 mails, Yoko? Please, reply when you have a minute.

  22. Such beautiful photos, I almost missed them!
Here in Israel we had quite cold weather too, it got down to almost 0 degrees (which is cold for us!) :-)
We had a lot of rain the last two months, which is a real blessing. All is green now, and the wildflowers started to bloom. We don't have very sharp divided seasons, they change kind of softly from one to the other. Anyhow it is hot and rain less for seven or eight months. And we don't have gloomy melancholic dark rainy days on a row. The sun is always coming out in between. At the Hermon mountain snow fell, and a bit in Jerusalem too.
    Greetings and a hug.

  23. What lovely photographs of patterns formed by nature. I hope that England has some colder weather before the end of winter. It is necessary to kill soil bugs and infections in time for next summer.

  24. Love the shades of vintage blue on the first photo. Did you have to tweak the colors or is that straight from the camera? :)

    1. Hi, Koryn. The photo is straight out from the camera, I photographed it a little over exposed. I don’t have any photo editing soft except windows photo gallery which allows me to do only a little outside my camera.

  25. Your images of winter are really lovely. I wonder if your temperatures in Japan have improved. Here in my corner of Canada we are enjoying a very mild winter, and as I look out of the window this morning, there is no snow on the ground at all. Very unusual for February! But I think it will be colder by the end of the week. You are right, winter has a beauty, the bare trees against the sky.
