"Dance on the edges of Time"

When I was at the greenhouse of the Kashihara City Insectarium, I was excited to see many butterflies of various species as I hadn't seen so many ones at one time.  They are really graceful “flying flowers” flitting fluidly among the static flowers of the greenhouse from one to another.

They fluttered, danced, and sat on a flower to savor the joy of this world
or to pose to have their pictures taken.
I enjoyed each moment taking pictures of them.

Hebomoia glaucippe

A butterfly has to struggle out of their cocoon to spread their beautiful wings. Likewise, don’t we have the time when we have to fight to leave the chrysalis situation in order to fly with wings of our mind?

Danaus chrysippus

Papilio polytes

Among all the ephemeral insects, a butterfly is often attributed as a symbol of fleeting life perhaps because of their delicate appearance with beautiful paper-thin wings. The average life span of a butterfly is about a month from egg to the end.  We live much longer than butterflies, but what is the difference compared to the infinity?

Idea leuconoe

"The butterfly counts not months but moments,
and has time enough.

Time is a wealth of change,
but the clock in its parody makes it mere change and no wealth.

Let your life lightly dance on the edges of Time
like dew on the tip of a leaf."

-Rabindranath Tagore-

  4. Fabulous photos Yoko. The colours and patterns are mesmerizing - I love how some resemble dried leaves and others look like flowers and birds.

  7. Such profound words from Rabindranath Tagore - a butterflies life is brief but beautiful, what pleasure they bring into our lives and gardens.

  8. These photos are exquisite. We have something called “Butterfly World” on Vancouver Island, a ferry ride distance from where I live. I recall the wonder of seeing the delicate creatures flitting about and seemingly quite comfortable around people … even landing on some shoulders as if to pose for pictures. There is no better analogy to express the fleeting yet timeless nature of life.

  12. Wow, really breathtaking butterfly photographs, Yoko! The last time I visited a greenhouse with butterflies was two or three years ago on the Danish island of Bornholm. Unfortunately I never found the time to postprocess and post the photos. Some of the butterfly species I know from the Danish butterfly park. But I'm not sure if I managed to take such great photos like you did, Yoko. Great artwork, dear friend!
    Uwe.

  13. You hit the butterfly jackpot, Yoko! Their ephemeral nature makes them even more lovely. Seeing their patterns, textures, and delicacy uplifts the spirit. You have so many great shots, but I especially love the Hebomoia and the Papilio.

  14. Yoko-san,
Thank you so much for taking such beautiful photographs of delicate butterflies. I didn't know that they only lived for one month, such a short time, but what a life. -- Noriko

  15. Spectacular shots, Yoko. The butterflies look very happy posing for you! My favorite is the Hebomoia glaucippe from among them all. These butterflies may have a short span of life yet they know how to make it so joyful, not only for themselves but also for everyone else who come in contact with them. They are such a delight to watch... and here, through your lens, you make them even more. Their fleeting delicate nature and zest for life is beautifully expressed through your words and Rabindranath Tagore's poem. Your words put so much soul into these beautiful captures, they touch the heart.

Wish you a wonderful weeks ahead, Yoko :)

  29. Wow! Some pictures look too good to be true! I don't mean they are fake, but... How do you do that?! I love your post and philosophical reflections, Yoko. Thank you!
I've shared impressions on what I read recently and would like to hear yours. Sometimes it seems as if all around you forgot what books are. A bitter feeling for a philologist, you know.

  37. As always, your photos are marvellous. At first I didn't know which butterfly I liked best, but then I realised that Papilio polytes intrigues me the most because of its unusual shape. One of the pleasures of visiting a foreign place is to see the different types of butterflies in the countryside, I always notice them.
