Water balls, light, and bokeh

I like to capture dancing light with bokeh effect.

During the coldest days of the warm winter, I played with colored balls
in a crystal bowl with my camera.

By the window

In the sunlight outside

The balls look so delicious, don't they?
You can't eat them; the objects are not candies.
Tiny beads made of sodium polyacrylate swell to five times their volume in water.
The small balls jiggle like jiggly jelly.

Zooming up, each aqua gel ball has a cute face.

What is water balls?

Heavy shadow of despair descended.
An early death of the source of hope for a better country.
He died but his idea does not,
His voice "Never give up" resonates.

  1. Lovely images and the first time I have heard of the word bokeh. The effects are magical and joyful. At the same time, Navalny died and that is disturbing and terribly sad. Sometimes life itself seems very out of focus. May his memory be a blessing.

  3. You did have fun with your camera. I assume your ending poem is for Navalny in Russia. It's very poignant.

  5. His was a remarkable man, and even though he must have known that it would end in the way it has, he never ever thought of giving up on his country.
Love the fun that you must have had playing with the coloured balls and creating bokeh effects. I bet your grandchildren enjoy them too.

  7. We are heartbroken for Russia that Putin has killed Navalny. And we have Trump who does not condemn it. He's even compared Navalny's murder to his legal troubles. Good grief!

  8. I particularly like the visual gimmicks with the water spheres. And I can understand you very well, dear blog friend, what you are expressing with the last verse. It is true. Understanding the world, with all the conflicts, with all the suffering, is harder and harder. This encouragement is therefore valuable and I am happy about it.

Thanks for sharing with MosaicMonday I'm very happy about it again. It's evening and I have time to look at the pictures in peace, to read the respective article!

I wish you and your family a pleasant week, hugs

  10. Dear Yoko!
    Your colorful photos are beautiful.
There is a war going on outside my country. Ukraine is fighting and Putin is murdering people. Now he has killed Navalny. Will this man/beast not come to his senses?
    Hugs and greetings.

  14. Your dancing light is magic, Yoko. Never heard of those water balls. I smiled at your “coldest days of warm winter”. Our recent temperatures feel like early spring, -7-8 Celsius. There’re patches of melted snow at noon.
I wish you blooming March, dear friend.

  16. I love the bokeh! You make be want to try a similar photo shoot using my antique marbles. Our son and 2 oldest grandsons visited Japan in February for 10 days. They skied Niseko Resort and spent a few days in Tokyo. They had a wonderful trip.

  18. You played with your camera and your game tickled me. Thank you for the added explanations and for the final verse, whose depth may be disconcerting in the face of this play of colors, but which reminded me of a quote from the philosopher Nietzsche: “The maturity of man is to have found again the seriousness with which he played as a child.”
